We live in a connected world and it’s likely that you use devices such as computers, laptops and mobile phones throughout your day. Whilst this connectivity has lots of amazing benefits, it also opens you up to viruses and malware! In this post we look through some of the common ways you can get viruses and look at how antivirus software can help you.
How Do You Get A Computer Virus?
When using a device which is connected to the internet it is possible to get a virus on your device from some common tasks. Some of the main ways in which you can get viruses include:
- Emails – they are one of the most common ways to get a virus, with viruses often being hidden in attachments and malicious links.
- Downloads – if downloading something, especially when not from a legitimate source, you can open yourself to getting a virus within your download.
- Other messaging services – sometimes other messaging services will allow you to download attachments or allow links to be sent. Much like emails this can lead to viruses.
- Outdated software – software is usually updated regularly to improve security issues and not having these updates can potentially open an entry point for potential viruses and malware.
There are many ways you can get viruses and it’s not always obvious. It’s therefore important that you have antivirus software installed in order to detect and remove these viruses for you.
What Is Antivirus Software?
Antivirus software works in the background of your device in order to detect viruses and malware which can infect your devices. Once detected they work to prevent the virus or malware from causing any damage to your device and will look to block or remove it completely from your device. They are regularly updated to be able to detect and protect your devices from the latest viruses and malware.
What Free Antivirus Software Is Available?
There are some free antivirus software products available, however these are usually lite versions and may not fully protect your devices. An example of a free antivirus software is Avast, who also offer a premium version of the antivirus software. Whilst we’d recommend going for a paid antivirus (see our recommendation below) in order to get full protection, a free version will be better than having no virus protection at all!
